Christmas From Nowhere
“Remember that you do no one a favour if you confuse biblical and Canadian Christmas.”
The Miracles of Jesus and His Crucifixion
At Easter, Christians celebrate the resurrection of Jesus. But what does Christ's crucifixion and resurrection mean, and why did Jesus die on the cross?
Reforming Lent
“After leaving them, Jesus went up on a mountainside to pray” (Mark 6:46 NIV).
I am not saying you should keep Lent this year, but I ask you—is the Lord calling you to set aside 40 days for a more focused growth in godliness?
2 Years In: COVID Reflections from Canada
The lockdowns were sudden and unexpected. The government said it would take two weeks to flatten the curve. Our church, like most Canadian churches, was not equipped or experienced in online worship.
PLEASE WASTE SOME OF YOUR PRAYERS
You know people. You can "size them up." This is often very important for your safety! But the problem is that you also "size them up" and conclude that someone like them would never become a Christian.
THE BIG HIDDEN ASSUMPTION
Why is it that if you read what Wikipedia says about the date and authorship of the Gospels, it is very different from the way most pastors in evangelical churches, and most ordinary Christians, talk about the Gospels?
AMNESIA AND PRAYER
If you are at all well instructed in the Christian faith, you know that God hears and answers every one of your prayers. He either says, "No," "Not yet," or "Yes." However, most of us talk about prayer in a very different way, and our unreflective speech reveals what we actually believe.
GETTING VACCINATED AND COVID-19
Just because the Bible is silent on many matters does not mean everything outside of the bible is gray, uncertain, and relativistic.
THE BIBLE AND ROSE COLOURED GLASSES?
“All you can do is wear rose coloured glasses and pretend you have the real Bible and that you can really understand it." Have I "tipped my hand" about the real state of the Bible? Not at all.
TALKING ABOUT SIN IN A WORSHIP SERVICE
People like having positive experiences. Nothing sucks the positive out of a room more than mentioning sin.
NORMAL LIFE AND EASTER SUNDAY
Our true hope was never in our search for god. Our true hope was that He would search for us - but more than us - that He would search for you and me - but more than search - that He would search and save.
READ THE BIBLE LITERALLY?
Just as you can get things wrong in modern day life, so you can get it wrong with the Bible.
ACKNOWLEDGE MY WRETCHEDNESS?
Shouldn’t religion and spirituality be all about helping people feel better about themselves? Doesn’t this prayer encourage you to have a terrible self-image?
CONFESSION OF SIN AND THE GOSPEL
The time nestled between justification and glorification is a time of sanctification. In that time you strive to put off vice and put on virtue.
PRAISE THAT FORMS YOU
To boast truely and wisely is to boast knowing that by His grace you are an adopted child of the true and living God.
SING ALLELUIA TO THE LORD
The Bible describes and encourages ceaseless praise. I want to begin by stating the biblical teaching in a “positive” manner. The Bible is filled with commands and exhortations to praise the Lord with our lips.
MIXED FEELING ABOUT LENT
Everyone can become legalistic and have a “religious spirit” about how their church service is organized or unorganized. Legalism and a religious spirit are human problems.
ENJOYING THE LOCKDOWN
God’s word does not require that we all react emotionally the same way at the same time. The lockdowns have not affected everyone equally.
LOCKDOWN BLUES
The lockdowns are hard. They are hard in too many ways to count and in too many ways to describe.
ARE WE STILL EVANGELICALS?
Is it time to drop the word “evangelical” - not because we have changed, but because the word’s meaning has changed and no longer defines us? It is time to stress the depths and age of our roots. What we believe and how we seek to live goes right back to Jesus in unbroken continuity.
“Remember that you do no one a favour if you confuse biblical and Canadian Christmas.”
